Course Description

This graduate seminar will investigate advanced research topics for 2D/3D content creation. We will look at basic mathematics for acquiring and representing 2D and 3D shapes, such implicit surfaces, mesh representations, and differential geometry. Then we will look at algorithms for manipulating shapes, such as deformation/warping, replicating shapes, symmetries. Finally we will look at fabrication research, such as design of structures, and printing of 3D objects, materials, and mechanical objects. Students will be expected to read roughly 20 papers.

Prerequisites

Requires programming experience for projects, and basic knowledge from linear algebra (e.g. Math 3351) and calculus (Math 1310). Recommend also multivariate calculus (Math 2310). Any knowledge from computer graphics or vision will be helpful.

Grading

There will be roughly two programming assignments (35%), in class discussions (15%) and a final project (50%).

For in-class discussion you should sign up to present a paper one of the class days below (or join someone else's presentation). The presentation is informal so no slides are needed. We can bring the paper up on the projector. Have a few questions to discuss for the class. Credit is also given for contributing to paper discussions.

Assignments

• Mini-project 1: Mesh hello world
• Project 2: Basic mesh processing

• Select a project idea. Choose a paper above (from class 17 to class 28) to implement, or else choose an idea of your own, or one of the ideas Connelly came up with:
  • Bricks similar to LEGO. Your program should given an arbitrary model, convert it to voxels with a code such as SDFGen. Then construct a triangle mesh consisting of non-overlapping bricks, which interlock similar to LEGO/DUPLO, and which in aggregate mimic the original model. Fabricate this model.
  • Gear assemblies or joints. Could explore driving different parts of an articulated model like Coros et al 2013. Or investigate generating non-circular gears. Or adding joints to existing static models downloaded from the Internet, e.g. hinge and ball joints.
  • Printing procedurally generated models such as hair, trees. For example, trees can be generated by L systems, or hair can be generated by extruding many cylinders along a vector field.
  • 3D Collage.
• Choose a team of 1-2 people.
• Submit a brief project plan to Collab by Saturday April 19. Write who is on your team and a paragraph or two plan describing the project and what each person will implement.
• On the last day of class teams will present current results.
• During finals week, place an order to fabricate your most interesting result. On finals day (Friday 5/9/2014, 9 AM-Noon, Rice 340) present the latest results and the fabricated model.
• Please submit your final project results on Collab by Sunday May 11 (11:59 PM).
